Douglas Fir is know as the strongest of soft woods and makes excellent framing lumber and timbers for post and beam construction. The Fir grown in this area is slower growing with tight grain and high density.
This specie group is highly sought after for both dimension and boards and is produced by our Canadian neighbors in large quantities. The Company has recently enjoyed a relationship with the Gorman Brothers Reman plant in Oroville that specializes in high grade one inch boards from the Lodge pole and Spruce timber. We have been able to supplementtheir growing demand for the white wood boards and supply there operation with rough green lumber for further processing at the Oroville plant. The supply from our mill is a very small fraction of the Gorman’s total product but could be expanding as we find good timber sources in this specie group.
Services
The Company owners also operate a whole log chipping operation on the plant site to the South of the Saw mill. The operations involve purchasing“pulp” logs by the green ton and converting the logs into wood chips for the pulp and paper industry. This service makes it possible to clean up a land owners property without engaging in slashing or burning the smaller tree stems. Top diameters of the acceptable pulp logs start at 3 ½ inches. Almost any specie of soft wood is accepted at the chipping operation.
The Company has contracted to cut other firms logs into custom cuts and or surfaced rough products shipped into the plant from others. These arrangements are normally made for larger volumes of timber or boards.
Partner Howard Zosel (the sole proprietor of Z’s Engineering) offers design, inspections, engineering reviews and consulting on a number of structural and mechanical problems for local builders and home owners.
Additionally, we design timber frame structures that take advantage of the Sawmill’s Fir timbers and siding products.
The Ponderosa Pine is a slow growing tree with drought resistance for the Eastern slopes of the hills surrounding Oroville. The products from the Ponderosa Pine are known for theirbeauty and the Company has made one inch boards from the pine logs for many uses from crating to window trim.
